August 2010 Prayer

Greetings!
I just wanted to ask you to pray for us this week regarding some big things going on with our mission in Latvia.
1. The Petrik family is visiting and are a great encouragement and help - Praise God and thanks to those who helped sent them! They are here until September 9th.
2. This week (Aug 16-20) we are serving at a English/Christian camp for kids age 9-13, please pray for true conversions as I have been given the responsibility to preach the gospel to the kids over 5 evening services (Topics: Creation, Sin, Jesus, Salvation, Discipleship). AND August 24 I was invited to a "History makers" camp for 120 young adults to teach a workshop about Verse by verse Bible study and Sound Doctrine! Exciting opportunity to meet more christians from various churches. Pray God stirs up a hunger for His Word in them.
3. This Sunday (August 22) as our fellowship returns from the countryside and we will meet at a new location and pray for the relaunching of Sunday morning services. We found a new location is cheaper, closer to us and meets our practical needs for childrens ministry and adults bible study.
4. We will be evangelizing daily (August 24-28) and inviting people to church Sunday (August 29). There happens to be an international business school across the street from our meeting place with students moving into dorms that week too. and with the Petriks and a handful of new translators to help us, we are excited to reach out and see what God will do. Pray for salvation and as we seek the lost and Christians who need a Bible teaching church.
Thank you, for your prayers, support and for your concern for the lost and the church in Latvia.

May prayer requests

Hi,
I know that many of you have been praying for us, and I am very thankful. Sorry I have not posted our usual monthly bullet points for prayer, but it has been difficult for me to know how to sum up the challenges we have been facing since we have been back in Latvia. Well, I've written out some requests with explanations so you can pray with understanding. Thanks again!

1. For our church in the summer time. Many locals scatter from the cities to the country side, beaches and forests in the summer, where they work in the fields and/or rest in little summer homes. Many churches seem "empty" in the summer and it's even harder for small churches like ours to maintain services while they are away. It feels like Acts 8:1 when "they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles." So we will be changing our Sunday services at the hotel to a home fellowship for June and July. Our last worship service before the break will be May 30 and we hope to resume Sunday services again starting August 15th. PRAY: that our last service together would be a blessing and that the believers would follow the example of the early church "those who were scattered went about preaching the word." (Acts 8:4).

2. For evangelism. Now that the weather is warm and sometimes hot, it's prime time to preach the gospel on the streets and parks in Riga. We've been going out a few times a week to share in different ways: Open air preaching, word on the street interviews, a survey using an ipod app with a gospel presentation in 11 languages (especially helpful for Spanish, French, German, English tourists that come to Riga). I might be doing some itinerant preaching around Latvia in June and July. And I also have been invited to Estonia (to the North) and the Lithuanian border (to the south). Pray the door stays open to continue preaching freely, unhindered, and effectively. Pray that many may hear and that faith may come to them by hearing the word of God!

3. Pray for our family to be encouraged. Sometimes it's discouraging getting rejected when we share the gospel, and having few attending the church. When I evangelize many promise to think about it and some say they might come to church. We know it takes time to plant a church and people need to count the cost before committing to Christ, so pray we would have patience and not grow weary in doing good. It's hard not having a team of missionaries like we did in Ukraine. We are looking forward to the encouraging fellowship at the next Calvary Scandinavia conference (the first week of August). Also we are looking forward to a short term missions team coming from Calvary Chapel Santa Cruz to Latvia the 2nd week of August!! That leads to the next prayer point...

4. Pray for CCSC members who are called to serve in Latvia in August. Pray for Ryan Petrik who hopes to lead his family here for a month and for pastor Bill Bjorkman who hopes to lead a team for a couple weeks. May God make their calling sure, provide for the expenses (about 2500 each), and give us good communication and preparation between now and then. If you would like to donate toward their mission, I believe you can make donations at their site www.CalvaryChapelSantaCruz.com, But please pray for the provision as they will need to buy airplain tickets soon.

God bless you and reward your faith as you seek His will and labor in prayer for the great commission! Thank you!

May Newsletter

Dear friends,
The month of May marks the two year anniversary since we moved to Latvia as church-planting missionaries. We are thankful as God has been faithful to provide for all our needs according to His riches in glory. And we are trusting Him to continue the good work that He started here in Latvia. We are writing to share great news and to inform you of a great need we will have in May, 2009.

First of all, the great news: We have been studying through the Bible with twelve disciples (Vitaly and Christa, Janis and Marion, Sergey and Jelena, Leonid and Inese, Artis and Ieva, Agnese and Sveta). Currently I am teaching 1 Kings and our plan for 2009 is to finish the Old Testament. Last week, we moved our Sunday morning services to a bigger venue in the center of Riga and the rent is covered by those who are attending. Our evangelism team continues to give out many gospel tracts every week and we have also been invited to minister to orphans in a village where Sergey has been delivering humanitarian aid. So God is doing great things and we believe greater things are yet to come in the months and years ahead!

Now, we have a great need in the month of May... It's time to renew our residence permits for our 3rd year and one of the requirements is that we prove we have the "necessary substinance" (a minimum of $11,500). This is not the cost of the visa, it's the minimum Latvia expects to be in our savings account for our living/ministry expenses. Because of the economic crisis, some of our generous supporters have been out of work, so our savings falls short. The bottom line is, we will need an additional $8000 by the end of May.

If you are interested in helping to meet this need, the best way to help is to send a check any amount made payable to "Calvary Chapel Monterey Bay" and then mail it to 3001 Monterey-Salinas Hwy, CA 93940. Do not write our names on the check but include a separate note designating "for Latvia" and we will receive 100%. But if you want to donate by credit card online, you can conveniently give to our cause and we will receive 95.25% (because of credit card processing fees). If you can send a one time gift this month it will help us to renew our residence permits for the next year of church planting in Latvia.

Thank you all for your partnership in the gospel.
To God be the glory!

Prayer update March 2009

  1. For our two church services (in Riga and Ogre). Pray that all the believers will grow in the knowledge of Christ as Brenten teaches through the Old Testament.
  2. For evangelism. We have been met with many hard hearts. May God convict of sin, open eyes, grant faith and repentance and the fruit of changed lives.
  3. For Women's ministry. One of the women coming to Bible study is not a Christian yet. Pray she'd surrender and the other women keep growing in truth and love.
  4. For our health. We are finally healthy after a month of sickness. Pray we may stay healthy through the rest of winter.
  5. Pray that Brenten would find time this month to study for his Latvian drivers liscence test.

The send off prayer from CCMB

The send off prayer from our home church from Brenten Powers on Vimeo.

Nate and I have been friends since 2000 when he was teaching the college age group and I was leading worship. He is a very gifted teacher and has always encouraged us in missions, so we are blessed to have him as our new senior pastor at Calvary Chapel Monterey Bay. This video is from January 29, 2009 when the church prayed for us at the end of our furlough and sent us back to Latvia with their blessing.

Pray for Calvary Bible Church

We are sensing that this is going to be a GREAT year with great challenges and joys as He has given us the assignment to preach the gospel and form a new church Latvia. We are going to call it "Golgātas Bībeles draudze" which translates to "Calvary Bible Church". If you pray for us monthly, weekly or daily - we thank God for you! This month I would ask you to be praying for three specific things:
  1. For our evangelism team: Praise God for sending more laborers from Riga! Pray for boldness to preach one and one and open air, freedom to keep preaching in the train station, conviction on the hearers hearts.
  2. For the church: Praise God for drawing people to hear the word. Pray for Brenten to passionately preach Christ as we go through Genesis and Exodus, for the hearers to understand and apply the word, for translators to be faithful.
  3. For our family: Praise God for the love, joy and peace at home. Pray for a good babysitter so Brenten and Lena can have a regular time to date.

Vacation Bible School

This is our second year doing VBS in Ogre with a team from Tennessee. I have been the music guy as well as overseeing all the translators. The first two days went well, setting a foundation of who Jesus is, we are praying that the kids will continue to be receptive in the last three days as we challenge them with the rest of the gospel, calling them to become disciples of Jesus Christ.
